Homeschooling Legally

I think every homeschooler's nightmare would be someone from the state showing up on their doorstep! Every state has different guidelines for homeschoolers, some more relaxed than others. We must know our laws and our rights in order to prevent any conflict with the government.

If you read my blog much...you know I used to teach public school (before baby #2 came along). The last year I taught, my school's superintendent began to pressure me to send the school a letter informing them I was homeschooling. (At this point, you're probably wondering how I homeschooled my son, and had a full time job at school! It wasn't easy...and my mom implemented most of our curriculum during the day.)

Anyway, I was ticked off...probably because I have a bad attitude about people being in my business...but I KNEW he had  no right to demand that of me. I knew that because I had read the rules for my state...Missouri. (If you're a psycho killer, please ignore that tidbit of information...Missouri's a big state, right?)

Anne at Molding Minds Homeschool wrote about laws in her state of Texas and what to do if someone comes knocking at your door! How is it that we as Americans often forget our rights that are PLAINLY spelled out in the constitution! Such as Amendment 4:

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

Here are a couple of websites that may help you learn more about your rights as homeschoolers:
recently formed a team of parents, students, and attorneys that work strictly with homeschoolers.
Lots of information about the rights of homeschoolers! Use the navi bar at the left to explore their website and find out important information about the laws in your state.
The U.S. Constitution: And Fascinating Facts About It
We need to be prepared and organized and know our rights BEFORE a situation arises.
This scary time in our government calls for lots of prayer and wisdom!
